Northern State racked-up 601 yards of total offense and held Minnesota, Crookston to just 263 yards on its way to a 62-13 victory on Senior Day Saturday at Swisher Field. The win moves the Wolves to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC North Division. NSU's seven wins this season are the most under Head Coach
Tom Dosch and the most since 2003.
Jared Jacobson passed for 286 yards and five touchdowns in the win. Jacobson now has 65 passing touchdowns for his career, just two shy of the school record 67 set by Jason Landmark (1986-89). Jacobson also had a rushing touchdown on the day.
Two of Jacobson's scores went to
Cody Kraft, who led the Wolves with four catches for 77 yards in the victory. Zach Barber,
Taylor Houchin, Ben Jastram and
Nathan Mangin also had receiving touchdowns on the day.
Nicholas Truen led NSU with 123 yards rushing while Houchin added 83 and a 49-yard score and
Stephen Erlandson added 45 on the ground.
Defensively,
Ryan Weybrecht led the way with five tackles and a half a sack. The Wolves forced four turnovers in the game, two by way of interception and two fumble recoveries.
Tanner Feterl and
Zach Neer recorded the picks, while
Matt Thorson and
Cody Braeger recovered the fumbles. Braeger added a 20-yard "scoop-and-score" on his with 2:58 left in the game to give Northern its final score.
NSU scored the first 21 points of the game, striking first with 5:38 left in the opening quarter on Kraft's 34-yard touchdown. Houchin caught his TD pass on Northern's next drive and Kraft's second of the day came with 13:05 left in the first half to put the Wolves up 21-0.
After UMC (0-10) scored to make it 21-6, Jacobson hit Barber from 24 yards out to make it 28-6. On UMC's next drive,
Trever Heining forced a fumble and NSU went on to drive 70 yards on 12 plays, capped by Mangin's 12-yard touchdown grab. On the ensuing kickoff, the Golden Eagles muffed the return and NSU recovered at the UMC 27. Four plays later, Jacobson ran it in from the two and Northern carried a 42-6 lead into the locker room.
Jared Hannigan hit Jastram on a 31-yard pass for Northern's first score of the second half. UMC would add a late touchdown on a 71-yard Dre Person run before Houchin scored from 18 yards out.
The Wolves close the regular season next Saturday as they travel to Bemidji State for a 1 p.m. kickoff with the Beavers.
