Photo GalleryAberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University women's basketball team recorded their fifth win to open the season, 68-39 versus South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The 29 point deficit in the Wolves largest margin of victory this season. The Wolves improve to 5-0 on the year, with one non-conference game scheduled for Tuesday evening.
Rachel Krogman recorded her third double-double in as many games, tallying 18 points and 11 rebounds. Krogman's scores bring her to 974 career points, with 1000 in sight.
Paige Waytashek and
Sadie Stotesbery each notched 13 points in the victory. Waytashek claimed two of the teams' three long range buckets. Stotesbery and Krogman shot 66.7 percent and 53.8 percent respectively from the floor.
The Wolves scored 14 bench points in the game off the hands of
Kara Hofschild (3),
MacKinzie Magner (5),
Brooke Berger (2),
Lauren Deadrick (2), and
Jessica Anderson (2). The Northern post players continued to shine, as the Wolves out-rebounded their opponents 50-35 and scored 16 points off 14 offensive rebounds. Northern recorded 36 points in the paint; over half of their final bill.
The NSU defense held the Hardrockers to a 25.5 shooting percentage from the floor and 23.1 shooting percentage from three point range. The Wolves forced 15 turnovers, which resulted in 16 NSU scores. Northern held Mines leading scorer, Peterson to a mere six points, as she was 2-for-5 from the floor.
Offensively the Wolves held a solid 40 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free-throw line. The women recorded only nine turnovers in the win, for only four Hardrocker scores. Northern looks to improve from three point range as they were 3-for-15 in the contest.
The Wolves will be back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Mayville State with the men to follow. Northern will then begin the NSIC regular season next Saturday from Wachs Arena with a 5 p.m. match-up against MSU Moorhead.
