Listen LiveThe Northern State men's basketball team opens its 2014-15 home slate Wednesday evening as Southwest Minnesota State comes to Wachs Arena for a non-conference matchup. It will be the first of 15 home games for the Wolves this season and will kick off a seven-game homestand.
The Wolves opened their season with a pair of wins over MIAA opponents last weekend at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. NSU defeated Missouri Southern 74-69 in the season opener and bested Pittsburg State the next day 75-68.
Seth Bachand averaged 13.5 points and 11 rebounds per game in the two wins while shooting 69 percent from the floor. Bachand also added five blocks over the weekend and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds in the Wolves' victory over Pittsburg State.
Skye Warwick averaged 12.5 per in the two games and picked up right where he left off last season with his three-point shooting as he hit 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from downtown. Meanwhile,
Carter Evans averaged 11 points, 7.5 rebounds and a block per game down in Sioux Falls.
The Mustangs are led by sixth-year Head Coach Brad Bigler, who is 85-63 at SMSU. Southwest is led by Joey Bartlett who is averaging a team-best 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game this season. Cole Martin is second on the team averaging 14.5 points and three assists per. The Mustangs are shooting lights-out early on as they are hitting 55 percent of their shots from the floor and shooting nearly 56 percent from three-point range.
Southwest is also 2-0 on the season, having beaten East Central (Okla.) 76-70 and Arkansas Tech 93-78 last weekend.
SMSU dominated the Wolves in the two's only meeting last season in Marshall, Minn., in the first game after the holiday break, 77-43. The Mustangs shot nearly 59 percent in the contest while Northern was held to just 35 percent shooting. Bachand led NSU with seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.
