Northern State 197-pounder
Joe Gomez claimed a third-place finish Saturday at the Dakota Wesleyan Open held in Mitchell, S.D. Gomez went 5-1 on the day and was the Wolves' highest finisher of the tournament.
Gomez opened the day with a 12-3 major decision over Southwest Minnesota State's Josh Vaughan. Gomez followed that up with a pin at 3:27 of Northwestern's (Iowa) Ray Schroder. Gomez's last win in the winner's bracket came by way of a 6-5 decision over Wayne State's Matthew DeGarmo.
Gomez would next lose to eventual champion Jayd Docken of Augustana, 5-2. Gomez would rebound in the consolation bracket with another major decision, this time 12-4 over U-Mary's John Devito. In the third-place match, Gomez bested Concorida-Moorhead's Ken Burkhardt, 2-1.
Anthony Navarro at 174 was NSU's other placer as he took sixth at DWU. Navarro opened the day with an 18-0 tech fall win over Briar Cliff's Ryan Dickinson. After a loss to Grand View's Dylan Blackford, Navarro won his first match in the consolation bracket via major decision, 12-3. After another major decision (14-5), Navarro defeated Ben Goodwin 8-7, before losing next to Jacob Begin.
Sean Havlovic at 157 had a solid day as well for Northern as he went 3-2 in the tournament. Havlovic recorded a 14-4 major decision and a 17-0 technical fall on the day. At 149,
Grant Steen went 2-2 and also had a pin on the day.
Northern returns to action next week, again at Dakota Wesleyan, this time it will be the Wolves' first dual of the season as they'll face the Tigers at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
