Wayne, Neb. – The Wolves women notched their second victory in as many days, as they defeated Nebraska-Kearney, 61-45 from the Wayne State Crossover Tournament. Northern improves to 2-0 on the year, as they head to Aberdeen for a seven game home stint beginning November 19
th against Jamestown at 6 p.m. from the Barnett Center and Wachs Arena.
Northern started off a bit rocky going a mere 3-for-16 in the first ten minutes of play, trailing the Lopers by one. The Wolves ended the half shooting 32.1 percent from the floor, while scoring 16 points in the latter ten minutes of the half. NSU was led by
Sadie Stotesbery with 15 points and seven rebounds. Stotesbery was matched by
Lauren Deadrick on the night, with seven rebounds of her own in addition to two blocks and four points scored.
Rachel Krogman shot for double-digit points again as she added ten to the team total, while leading the Wolves with eight boards. Starters
Megan Mutchler,
Paige Waytashek, and
Devon Brecke notched seven, five, and eight points respectively in the win.
The Wolves out-rebounded the Lopers, 43-33 in the game, 13 of which came offensively. NSU in recent years has been known for the play of their "bigs", who notched 18 points in the paint on the night. Stotesbery, Waytashek, and Brecke teamed up for the Wolves three long range buckets on the evening.
Northern improved their shooting from the free-throw line, as they were 13-for-14 in the second half and 74.1 percent in the game. NSU continued to see solid bench play in the early periods of the season, as the Wolf reserves combined for 16 team points. The Wolves largest lead, of 20 points, came with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
The NSIC prevailed in the crossover, with both the Wolves and Wayne State Wildcats, rounding out the weekend a perfect 2-0. Northern will return home for four non-conference match-up with Jamestown, Black Hills State, SD School of Mines, and Mayville College before the NSIC season opener against MSU Moorhead, November 29
th from Wachs Arena.
