Northern State setter
Drew Smith set a program record with 70 assists as the Wolves volleyball team rallied for a five-set victory Saturday over Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa. Smith also set a career-high with 22 digs in the match.
After dropping the first set 25-22, Northern (18-8, 11-7 NSIC) took a hard-fought second set 26-24 to even things up. The Peacocks (11-15, 6-12 NSIC) would rally in the third set and retook the lead with a 25-21 win. NSU would then rally to win the next two sets, winning set four 25-21 and surviving a long fifth set, 18-16 to win the match.
Mandy Kurosky led the Wolves with a career-high 18 kills in the match. Kurosky also hit a team-high .286 in the win.
Hailey Busch and
Kelsey Chambers each added 15 kills apiece. The 15 kills sets a new career-best for Busch, while Chambers also added 18 digs which ties a career-high for her.
Cari McGarvie added 13 kills and
Tori Biach had 10 as five Wolves had double-figure kills. McGarvie also led NSU with two total blocks in the win.
Renee Hoffman led the team with a career-high 25 digs from her libero position.
Annika van Oosbree added 17 digs in the win.
Northern hit .209 as a team and UIU hit .218 overall in the match. The Wolves had four service aces, led by Smith's two and just one serving error. The Peacocks had five aces and four errors as a team.
The Wolves close-out the regular season next weekend as they will host Minnesota State at 7 p.m. Friday and Concordia-St. Paul at 5 p.m. Saturday. Friday's match will be played at Aberdeen Central High School and Saturday will be Senior Night.
