Volleyball Defeats Crookston in Five

For the second consecutive match the Northern State volleyball team was able to hang on for a five-set victory as the Wolves defeated Minnesota, Crookston Friday night on the road.

After dropping the opening set 25-22, NSU responded to take the second and third sets 25-20 and 25-14, respectively. After the Golden Eagles took set four 25-18, Northern was able to hold off UMC for a 15-13 victory in the fifth set to clinch the win. NSU improves to 14-6 overall and 7-5 in league play.

All-American Kelsey Chambers was dominant in the victory as she recorded a career-best 26 kills on the night. It was the second straight match that Chambers set a career-high for kills. Chambers hit .447 in the win and also recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she added 10 digs. She also led the Wolves with two service aces in the match.

Jussy Tuscherer added a season-high 14 kills for Northern while Cari McGarvie added 11 and hit .364 on the night. Tori Biach led the Wolves with three total blocks while Mandy Kurosky, McGarvie, Tuscherer and Holly Vancura each added a pair of blocks in the win.

Vancura had a solid all-around night for the Wolves as she recorded 55 assists to go along with 11 digs and three kills. Renee Hoffman led the Wolves with 16 digs from her libero position and Annika van Oosbree chipped in with seven.

For the match, Northern hit .275 as a team while UMC (9-11, 3-9 NSIC) hit .258. NSU hit .314 or better in four of the five sets. The Golden Eagles also had twice as many service errors (10) than the Wolves (5).

The Wolves close the weekend Saturday as they travel to face Bemidji State in a 5 p.m. match from the BSU Gymnasium.
