The Northern State men's basketball team rebounded nicely on Saturday after a rough night Friday, winning on the road over Sioux Falls 96-79.
A night after their worst shooting performance of the season and scoring a season-low 44 points at Southwest Minnesota, Northern shot a season-best 62.5 percent (30-for-48) from the field and hit 10-of-14 from three-point range for a season-high 71.4 percent Saturday night. NSU's 96 points are also a season-high.
Skye Warwick led four Wolves in double figures with a game-high 17 points. Warwick went 6-for-7 from the floor and hit 5-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Tydan Storrusten added 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the win. Storrusten went 10-for-12 from the line and also had a block and a steal.
Trent Zomer added 14 points and six boards against the Cougars (6-6, 3-5 NSIC) while dishing-out a career-high six assists and was a defensive force in the paint adding three blocks in the win.
Darin Peterka had 10 points while
Jared Hannigan and
Spencer Pankonin each added nine points.
Northern (11-3, 6-2 NSIC) controlled the game from start to finish as the Wolves trailed just once in the contest, 3-2 in the opening minute of the game. NSU led by as many as 12 in the first half and carried a 46-35 lead into halftime.
USF scored the first six points of the second half and cut the Wolves' lead down to five but Northern responded after that going on a 20-7 run to push its lead quickly back up to 18 points. Northern led by double digits the rest of the game as the closest the Cougars would get was 10 at 73-63 with 8:14 remaining. NSU led by as many as 20 points late in the second half.
Northern held a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint and also scored 23 points off of 17 USF turnovers. NSU turned the ball over just 12 times in the game, leading to 12 points. The Wolves held a 35-27 advantage in points off the bench. USF did out-rebound the Wolves 37-28 and had 11 more second chance points than NSU.
Northern returns home for a pair of games next weekend. No. 14 Minnesota State comes to town for an 8 p.m. showdown Friday. Concordia-St. Paul comes to Wachs Arena for a 7 p.m. tip Saturday.
