For the first time this season, the Northern State men's basketball team has lost back-to-back games as the Wolves' comeback bid fell short Friday evening in a 79-71 loss to St. Cloud State on the road. The loss drops Northern to 13-6 overall and 8-5 in the NSIC.
Jared Hannigan led the Wolves with 15 points in the loss on 5-for-9 shooting including going 4-of-7 from three-point range. Hannigan also added five rebounds on the night.
Tydan Storrusten was an assist shy of his first career double-double has he scored 10 points and dished-out a career-best nine assists.
Seth Bachand also added 10 points in the game. Bachand had a solid all-around game recording five rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Skye Warwick chipped in with 12 points, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Northern shot 50 percent in the game (26-for-52) and hit 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) from three-point range while the Huskies (13-4, 9-4 NSIC) shot 44 percent (25-for-57) and made 50 percent of their three attempts (10-for-20). The big difference came at the line for SCSU as it hit 19-of-27 (70.4 percent) from the line while the Wolves made 9-of-15 (60 percent).
Northern got out-rebounded in the loss 34-31 and also committed seven more turnovers (18-11). St. Cloud also held an 18-11 advantage in points off of turnovers Friday. The Huskies also held a 22-17 edge in bench scoring while Northern outscored the Huskies 24-14 in paint points.
The Wolves got off to a slow start in the first half and found themselves trailing 35-19 with 2:53 left in the opening half, the Wolves' largest deficit of the game. Northern was able to cut the SCSU lead down to 35-25 going into halftime.
After St. Cloud hit a three-pointer to open the second half, Northern went on an 11-1 run to cut the Husky lead down to just three at 39-36 with 15:58 remaining in the game. SCSU was able to extend the lead again and built up a 13-point advantage with 7:24 left at 62-49. From there on out, Northern was able to only get as close as five points with 1:15 left, trailing 73-68.
NSU looks to get back on track Saturday evening as the Wolves finish their four-game road trip at Minnesota Duluth. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. from Duluth.
