The Northern State wrestling team traveled to Kearney, Neb., Saturday for the second annual Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraska-Kearney. The Wolves went 1-3 on the day as they faced three ranked opponents including two in the top-six.
In its second match of the day, Northern (3-5) defeated Newman 33-6.
Ian Muirhead at 141 pounds and
Beau Voegeli at 149 each recorded pins in the win. Muirhead's came at the 3:20 mark to put NSU up 9-3 and Voegeli's came at the 3:54 mark to lengthen the Northern lead to 15-3.
Anthony Bruno (125) opened the match with a 6-4 win over Dustin Reed. At 157 pounds,
Sean Havlovic won 6-5 over Colton Duhr.
Tyler Frost picked up a forfeit win at 165 while
Blake Lundgren (174) won 6-4,
Anthony Navarro (184) was victorious 6-3 and
Joe Gomez (197) won his match 8-4.
Havlovic had the best day overall for Northern as he went 3-1 on the day. Havlovic pinned Nebraska-Kearney's Colton Johnson at the 4:53 mark and won a 4-3 decision over Tavis Ino of San Francisco State.
Bruno, Voegeli and Lundgren all went 2-2 on the day for the Wolves. Bruno picked up a 6-4 decision over SFSU's Jordan Gurrola. Voegeli won in the opener 9-4 over Fort Hays' Matt Ziegler and Lundgren's other victory was a pin over Calvin Nicholls of SFSU at the 4:21 mark of their match.
Sixth-ranked Fort Hays State defeated the Wolves 36-9. No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney won 45-6 over NSU and 19
th-ranked San Francisco won 29-12.
Northern returns to NSIC action next weekend as the Wolves host a pair of home duals. St. Cloud State comes to Wachs Arena for a 7 p.m. match Friday while Upper Iowa comes to town Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 match.
