Bachand's Career-High Not Enough Against BSU

Seth Bachand's career-high 23 points on 11-for-15 shooting was not enough Saturday night as Northern State fell on the road to Bemidji State 85-77. With the win, the Beavers break a first-place tie with the Wolves for sole possession of first place in the NSIC North Division.

Tydan Storrusten added 12 points and a game-high five assists in the loss while Darin Peterka added 10 points and Trent Zomer scored eight points and led the Wolves with seven rebounds. Jake Schalow and Zach Noreen paced Bemidji State (12-4, 9-3 NSIC) with 21 and 20 points, respectively. The NSIC's leading scorer, Brock Lutes had 16 on just 4-for-15 shooting from the floor.

Northern (13-5, 8-4 NSIC) shot 44 percent (28-for-64) in the game and went 7-of-25 (28 percent) from three-point range. BSU, who is the number one shooting team in the conference, shot 51 percent (27-for-53) and went 9-of-16 (56 percent) from beyond the arc. The Beavers also held the edge at the free-throw line going 22-for-26 (85 percent) while the Wolves hit 74 percent (14-of-19) from the line.

NSU was out-rebounded Saturday, 36-31. Bemidji held the edge on second-chance points 21-17 over the Wolves. Northern had a solid edge on points off the bench as the NSU reserves scored 23 and BSU had 11 off its bench. The Wolves took great care of the ball for most of the game, committing a season-low four turnovers in the game and had a 12-4 edge in points off turnovers.

Saturday's contest featured eight ties and four lead changes with Bemidji State leading the entire second half as the Wolves' final lead in the game came with 1:51 left in the first half at 30-29. BSU led 35-34 at the break.

With 8:18 left in the game, Northern trailed 61-59 when the Beavers went on an 18-6 run over the next 4:53 and held its largest lead of the game up 79-65 with 2:33 left to play. A Spencer Pankonin three-pointer cut the BSU lead down to 82-75 with 48 seconds remaining but that was as close as NSU could pull within.

Northern continues its road trip next weekend as it travels to face St. Cloud State at 8 p.m. Friday and will face Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 6 p.m.
