The Northern State men's basketball team begins a four-game road trip this weekend as the Wolves travel north to face Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State. Northern and UMC play Friday night in an 8:00 start, Saturday the Wolves face BSU at 6 p.m.
NSU is currently in a four-way tie for first place in the NSIC North Division along with MSU Moorhead, St. Cloud State and Bemidji. The Wolves swept their first meetings of the season with the Golden Eagles and Beavers back in December. Northern defeated Crookston 79-64 and Bemidji State 75-59.
About the Golden Eagles:
Minnesota, Crookston is last in the league in scoring offense, averaging 66 points per game and is second-to-last in scoring defense allowing 81.1 points a game. Kevin Larson ranks third in the NSIC in assists per game with 4.5. Larson is also fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.17 and is eighth in minutes played per game at 31.43 a contest. Brandon Burns leads the Golden Eagles in scoring during conference play averaging 11.7 per contest. Ashton Harrell leads Crookston in scoring on the season averaging 15.3 points per game. Tyler West had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards in the first matchup with NSU.
About the Beavers:
Bemidji ranks third in the league in scoring offense averaging 83.9 points per game. BSU is tops in the league in shooting, hitting 51 percent from the field during NSIC play. The Beavers are also first in free-throw percentage at 75.5 percent. Their 42 percent three-point shooting and 16.8 assists per game are second-best in the league per contest.
The Beavers have three players in the top-14 in the conference in scoring per game. Brock Lutes leads the league in scoring at 19.4 per game during NSIC play. Zach Noreen is fifth (16.9) and Jake Schalow ranks 14
th (13.4). Schalow is the nation's top free-throw shooter as he is hitting 94.9 percent from the line. Noreen had 21 points and three steals in the first meeting with the Wolves. Northern kept Lutes bottled-up well in December, holding him to five points and 1-of-6 shooting.
Wolves Notes
Tydan Storrusten leads the Wolves in league play averaging 13.5 points per contest, which ranks 16
th in the conference. Storrusten is eighth in the NSIC averaging 3.7 assists per game.
Trent Zomer is averaging 12 points per game and his 6.7 rebounds per game are ninth-best in the league. Â
Seth Bachand ranks sixth in the league in field goal percentage as he makes 59.4 percent from the floor. Zomer (1.7) and Bachand (1.3) form a formidable defensive duo inside as they rank fourth and eighth, respectively in blocked shots per game.
Skye Warwick leads the league in three-pointers made as he hits 3.3 from beyond the arc per game. Warwick's 51.6 percent shooting from deep is sixth in the NSIC.
Northern is fifth in the league in field goal percentage at 47.6 percent from the floor and are sixth in three-point shooting at 40.2 percent. The Wolves are fourth in NSIC play averaging 13.9 assists per game and rank fifth in blocked shots with 3.8 a contest.
