Wolves Hold Off Concordia-St. Paul, 83-75

Four Northern State players scored in double figures Saturday night as the Wolves held off Concordia-St. Paul for an 83-75 victory in Wachs Arena. Northern improved to 12-4 on the season and 7-3 in NSIC play.

Trent Zomer led the Wolves with 19 points in the win. Zomer went 6-for-9 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. He also tallied eight rebounds, three assists and a block on the night. Tydan Storrusten added 15 points on 3-of-4 shooting and went a perfect 9-of-9 from the line to go along with a team-high four assists.

Seth Bachand and Skye Warwick each scored 14 points. Bachand pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and also had two blocks and a steal. Warwick hit 4-of-6 three-pointers in the victory. Tanner Heiser had a nice night as well for NSU. Heiser hit a pair of three-pointers and also dished-out three assists against the Golden Bears who fall to 4-10 and 1-9 in the NSIC.

Trailing early in the contest 4-2, Northern went on a 16-2 run and held an 18-6 lead with 10:53 to go in the first half. The Wolves pushed their lead to as many as 13 in the opening half and carried a 43-31 lead into halftime.

Concordia hung around in the second half as Northern couldn't quite deliver the knockout blow. The Wolves led 67-59 with 6:10 remaining when the Golden Bears went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to 69-66 with 3:31 left. After four NSU free-throws put the Wolves back up by seven, Concordia got back-to-back fast-break layups off of Wolves turnovers and trailed 73-70 with just 1:11 to go in the game.

The Wolves were solid from the stripe however, going 10-for-10 from the line the final minute of the game to hold on for the victory. Northern shot a season-high 82.4 percent from the line, going 28-for-34. The Golden Bears went 19-of-26 in the game (73.1 percent).

Concordia held the advantage in points in the paint (30-28), bench points (19-17), fast-break points (6-2) and second-chance points (16-4). The Golden Bears also scored 17 points off of 16 Northern turnovers while the Wolves had 14 points off 10 Concordia miscues.

Shooting was the big difference in this game as the Wolves shot 51.1 percent from the floor (24-for-47) and 46.7 percent from three (7-for-15). The Golden Bears shot 43.3 percent (26-for-60) and went 4-of-13 from deep (30.8 percent). Northern also held a 35-29 edge in the rebounding battle.

Northern will now hit the road for four consecutive road contests. The road trip starts next weekend as the Wolves face Minnesota, Crookston at 8 p.m. Friday and Bemidji State at 6:00 Saturday night. NSU swept its previous meetings with the Golden Eagles and Beavers back in December, defeating UMC 79-64 and 75-59 over Bemidji.
