For the first time in 2013, the Northern State volleyball team was defeated, as the Wolves fell to MSU Moorhead Tuesday evening in Moorhead, Minn., 3-1. After winning a back-and-forth marathon of a first set 31-29, NSU dropped the next three sets 25-12, 25-21 and 25-19.
Northern falls to 9-1 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC on the season, while Moorhead improves its record to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Kelsey Chambers led the Wolves with 21 kills in the match while hitting .409. Chambers also recorded her fifth double-double of 2013 by racking-up a season-best 17 digs. Libero
Sami Nygaard tied a career-high with 23 digs in the match to lead the Wolves.
Drew Smith had 43 assists to lead NSU to go along with two kills and a pair of block assists.
Cari McGarvie added 10 kills, three block assists and an ace in the match.
As a team, Northern hit a season-low .105 as a team and tied a season-low with four total blocks. The loss snaps NSU's nine-game winning streak which was the second-best streak in program history and was the best start to a season in school history.
The Wolves return to action with a pair of road matches this weekend. Northern travels to Marshall, Minn., Friday to face ninth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State in a 7 p.m. match. Saturday, NSU will play Sioux Falls at 4 p.m.
