Wolves Roll in Conference Opener

The Northern State volleyball team rolled in its NSIC opener Thursday night picking up its fifth sweep of the season in the victory over U-Mary in Bismarck, N.D.

The Wolves' eight consecutive wins to start the season is the best start in program history, their eight-straight wins are also tied for the second-most in program history (1982). Set scores Thursday went 25-14, 25-11 and 25-11.

Kelsey Chambers led five Wolves with five or more kills. Chambers recorded 10 in match while hitting .316, had nine digs, an ace and a block assist. Tori Biach had eight kills and once again led NSU with three blocks in the match. Macey Finizio had six kills and a career-high five service aces. Cari McGarvie and Jussy Tuscherer chipped in with five kills each. Setter Drew Smith had 29 assists in the sweep and also recorded eight digs.

The Wolves hit .343 in the win while holding the Marauders to a .013 attack percentage. NSU also picked up eight aces as a team.

It was a match of big runs for the Wolves. In the first set, Northern closed out the set with a 7-1 run. In set two, leading 5-4, the Wolves went on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 16-6 lead and cruised in the second set. In set three, NSU scored eight-straight points and finished the set on a 14-3 run to seal the victory and the sweep.

Northern returns to action Saturday in its home opener for a 5 p.m. match with Minot State from Wachs Arena. Head on over and check out the Wolves in action after the football game.
