Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. - A cool shooting night for the Wolves and a hot second half for the 25th-ranked Vikings ended in an 85-61 Augustana College win over Northern State on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings outscored the Wolves 50-28 in the second half after leading by just two at the half. Augustana, now 21-7 overall, moves on to the tournament semifinals next weekend. The loss likely ends Northern State's season at 20-11 overall.
Northern State raced out to an 8-0 lead to begin the game. The Vikings slowly, but steadily closed the gap and took their first lead at the 1:11 mark of the half and took a 35-33 lead into the break. Augustana turned the tables in the second half, using a 6-1 run to open the stanza and a 12-3 run over the first 5:50 of the half.
NSU rallied with a
Mack Arvidson three, followed by a pair of
Collin Pryor free throws and another from
Geoffrey Firmin to close to within seven at 51-44 with 11:14 left to play. That, however, would be as close as the Wolves would get, as Augustana stretched its lead back to double digits by the 10:18 mark and outscored the Wolves 29-13 the remainder of the way.
Northern State struggled to find a shooting rhythm in the second half, going just 8-for-29 from the floor and finishing the night 20-for-52 (38.5 percent). In contrast, the Vikings were 23-for-50 from the floor. Augustana also got 42 attempts from the line to just 27 for the Wolves.
Pryor led the Wolves with 16 points, while sophomore
Michael Emge came off the bench for 13. Arvidson chipped in nine, going 3-for-5 from long range.
Augustana was led by senior Cameron McCaffrey's 26 points, all but four of which came in the second half. Zach Huisken added 15, while Jamall Taylor came off the bench for ten.
