MANKATO, Minn. - The Northern State wrestling program battled, but fell by a 24-10 count to the eighth-ranked Minnesota-State Mavericks Friday night in the 2012-13 regular season finale.
NSU ends the season 5-11 overall in duals and 2-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. The Mavericks remained perfect in home duals, ending the season 7-0 in Mankato.
The Wolves picked up wins at 141, 197 and 285 pounds.
Ian Muirhead put the Wolves on the board with an 8-2 decision over Nathan Hennes at 141 pounds. The Mavericks rattled off five straight to take a commanding lead before the Wolves'
Chad Gibson and
Matt Meuleners earned wins in the final two bouts of the night. Gibson, wrestling up from his normal 184 pound slot, used a pair of takedowns to ward off MSU's Nathan Haynes 4-3.
Meuleners capped the night with a 16-3 major decision win over Corby Running.
NSU will now turn its attention to the NCAA Super Regional 3, to be held Sunday, Feb. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa.
