ABERDEEN, S.D. - In a dual meet that featured just three matches decided by a decision and the rest by fall, technical fall or forfeit, the Northern State Wolves came away with a high-scoring 31-18 win over Minot State Friday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling action.
The win snaps an eight-match skid for the Wolves, who picked up their first NSIC dual victory of the season.
Northern State jumped out to an early 17-3 lead after the opening four matches.
Anthony Bruno opened with a forfeit victory. The Beavers countered with a 5-4 decision at 133 pounds, but NSU's
Ian Muirhead and
Grant Steen earned big victories at 141 and 149 pounds respectively to push the lead. Muirhead dispatched his opponent with a 17-0 technical fall in the first two minutes of action, while Steen picked up a win by fall with 1:10 remaining in regulation.
Minot State, however, won the next three matches to take a brief lead in the team standings.
Gavin Larsen took his opponent to sudden victory before falling 6-4. Minot State then picked up back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 pounds with Eric O'Neill's victory coming on a defensive pin.
Those three wins put Minot State up 18-17, but that's as far as the Beavers would get. NSU regained the lead with a
Chad Gibson win in his return to the mat after an injury layoff.
Baker Haar claimed a win by fall at 197 pounds to give NSU a cushion and senior
Matt Meuleners capped the night with an 18-3 technical fall in the heavyweight match.
NSU is back on the mat tomorrow afternoon, hosting in-state rival Augustana in another NSIC match-up.
