Northern State shot a season-high 61.2 percent (30-for-49) from the floor as the Wolves won their second game of the weekend as they defeated U-Mary 83-74 Saturday night in Bismarck, N.D.
Trent Zomer led the Wolves with 16 points and six rebounds while going 6-for-8 from the field. Zomer also registered three blocks in the win as Northern improves to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in NSIC play.
Seth Bachand scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half while
Tydan Storrusten added 14 and a team-high three assists in the win.
Jared Hannigan had 10 points and a pair of steals while
Skye Warwick had nine points and went 3-for-3 from the floor.
The Wolves made six three-pointers in the contest while U-Mary hit four and also had a 17-12 advantage in made free throws. The Marauders held a big 36-to-25 edge on the glass as Northern wins its third game of the season while being out-rebounded, including both games this weekend.
NSU was in the lead for much of the game, trailing just twice at 27-25 with 5:29 to go in the first half and 49-46 with 15:23 remaining in the game. Down by that margin, Northern quickly responded with a 9-0 run to take a 55-49 lead and eventually push its lead to double digits later in the half.
Northern held a 19-8 advantage in bench scoring while also out-scoring U-Mary in the paint 48-45. Meanwhile, the Marauders held a 21-to-9 edge on second chance points and also had 12 fast break points while NSU had none on the break.
The Wolves will return home for the first time in conference play next weekend as Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State come to Wachs Arena. The game with UMC will be an 8 p.m. tip Friday while BSU will be a 7 p.m. game Saturday. Both games will be played as doubleheaders with the Northern women's team.Â
