Second Half Rally Propels Wolves to Home-Opening Win

The Northern State men shot a blistering 73 percent (16-for-22) from the field in the second half and held Jamestown to 36 percent from the floor in the second frame as the Wolves rally late to take their home opener 78-73 Tuesday night in Wachs Arena.

Seth Bachand and Trent Zomer each led the Wolves with a career-high 17 points in the win. Zomer added a career-best nine rebounds while Bachand went 6-for-7 from the floor and had two blocks and two steals in the contest.

The Jimmies (2-5) came out strong to open the game, hitting 58 percent from the field in the first half and also making 7-of-12 from three-point range. Jamestown led by as many 12 at 36-24 with 1:42 to go in the half after a Taylor Newton three. NSU cut the lead down to eight at 36-28 to go into halftime.

After a Mark Hoge three-pointer put the Jimmies back up by 11 early in the second half, the Wolves caught fire going on an 18-6 run to take a 46-45 lead with 14:21 to go in the game. It was Northern's first lead of the game since it was 13-12 with 13:47 remaining in the first half. From there, Jamestown responded again, taking the lead for the final time with 10:55 to go at 51-50. Skye Warwick's three-pointer put Northern up 53-51 and the Wolves wouldn't let the lead slip away again.

Tydan Storrusten had a big game off the bench for the Wolves as he scored a season-high 14 points and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Warwick hit a pair of threes in the second for NSU to help spark the run. Warwick also led the Wolves with three assists on the night. Mitch White added seven points, two assists and five rebounds in the win. Hoge led all scorers as he poured in 23 for the Jimmies.

For the game, Northern shot nearly 58 percent from the floor and also went 22-for-28 from the charity stripe. Jamestown shot 46 percent in the contest and made 19-of-25 at the line. Once again, Northern pounded the ball down low as the Wolves held a 32-14 advantage in the paint. NSU also outscored the Jamestown bench 26-22 in the win.

Turnovers helped keep Jamestown in the game as the Jimmies scored 21 points off of 12 Northern turnovers. The Wolves scored just seven points off of Jimmies miscues.

Northern returns to action for a pair of games this weekend in Wachs Arena. Dakota State comes to town for an 8 p.m. contest Friday that will be played after the Northern volleyball game. Sunday, Dickinson State is the opponent for a 4 p.m. tip.
