The 25
th-ranked Northern State volleyball team made quick work in its first-ever match as a ranked team as the Wolves swept MSU Moorhead Tuesday evening in Wachs Arena. Set scores were 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18.
The win is Northern's sixth consecutive victory and 10
th sweep of the season. The Wolves avenged a loss from earlier this season when the Dragons beat NSU 3-1 in September. It was Northern's first loss of the season.
Northern (16-3, 9-3 NSIC) started off the evening on fire scoring the first five points of the match and never trailing in the first set. In set two, after MSUM took a 1-0 lead, the Wolves went on an 11-2 run to take control of the set and cruise to a two sets to nothing lead in the match.
Set three was more competitive through the first part of the set, but NSU took control up 13-12 and closed-out the match on a 12-to-6.
Kelsey Chambers led the Wolves attack with 10 kills in the sweep. Chambers also had eight digs, a block and a pair of aces in the match.
Tori Biach and
Cari McGarvie each chipped in with eight kills, while adding two and three block assists, respectively.
Jussy Tuscherer added seven kills in the match.
Sami Nygaard had a solid game in the back row for the Wolves as she led Northern with 17 digs in the match. Nygaard also registered a pair of aces. As a team, the Wolves had eight aces and just one service error.
Renee Hoffman came in off the NSU bench and recorded nine digs in the match.
Drew Smith led the squad with 33 assists on the night.
Northern out-hit the Dragons .262 to .091 and also had 11 total blocks to Moorhead's five. The Dragons also had four service errors.
Northern continues its three-match homestand this weekend as Winona State and Upper Iowa come to town. WSU will be the opponent Friday for a 7 p.m. match while the Wolves and the Peacocks square-off at three p.m. Saturday.
