Setting the Stage: The Wolves head into the final week of regular season play with their destiny resting solely in their own hands. With a win on Saturday, the Wolves can seal up their spot in the NSIC tournament for the first time since reaching the semifinals of the 2008-08 tournament. That season was also the last time NSU made an appearance in the NCAA regional tournament. This Saturday's meeting is a re-match of a Jan 21 face-off in Aberdeen, which the Marauders won 70-69.
Last Time Out: The Wolves snapped a five game losing skid on Saturday with their 86-59 win over Concordia-St. Paul. The Wolves pulled away in the second half for the important win, which knocked the Golden Bears out of play-off contention and set the Wolves up for a key last weekend of play. NSU had started off the month of February on a four-game road skid before returning home to face St. Cloud State on Friday. The previously nationally-ranked Huskies rallied from a game-long deficit to force the game into overtime, where they pulled out an 87-83 win.
About U-Mary: The Marauders, though eliminated from post-season play, can still throw a monkey wrench in the Wolves' post-season plans with a win on Saturday. The Marauders enter the season finale with 7-18 overall and 6-15 NSIC marks and are coming off a 79-72 win over St. Cloud State last weekend.
Last Meeting with the Marauders: The Wolves got career-high efforts from sophomore
Trent Zomer (19 points, 12 rebounds) and
Geoffrey Firmin (15 points) and outscored the visiting University of Mary Marauders 41-31 in the second half, but were unable to overcome what was once a 14-point lead for the Marauders in a 69-70 loss back on Jan. 21. It was just the third home loss for the Wolves and first since December 10.
Playoff Implications:
- An NSU win on Saturday seals the Wolves' spot in the playoffs.
- A loss by Wayne State on either Friday or Saturday seals the Wolves' spot in the playoffs no matter what the Wolves do on Saturday.
- A loss by NSU on Saturday and two wins by Wayne State at Minnesota Crookston and MSU Moorhead knocks NSU out of the playoffs and puts WSC in the eights spot by virtue of the NSIC tiebreaker system.
NSU currently has 61 points. Loss @ U-Mary is worth one pt, giving NSU 62 total.
WSC currently has 54 points. Wins @ UMC (4) and MSUM (6) give them 64 total.
