ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State senior
Matt Meuleners came up big when his team needed him most. Down six to the visiting Chadron State Eagles heading into the final match of the night, Meuleners, the two-time defending national champion, worked a second-period pin to tie things up at 20-20. NSU was awarded the deciding team point on tie-breaker criteria, allowing the Wolves to escape with a 21-20 victory and improve to 3-0 in dual-meet action.
The Wolves claimed the point on the combined number of pins and technical falls. Meuleners pin at 285 points offset the Eagles' win by fall at 141 pounds, leaving
Anthony Bruno's technical fall win at 125 pounds - the opening bout of the night - as the deciding factor.
Each team won five matches. NSU's
Gavin Larsen,
Neil Sell and
Blake Lundgren gave the Wolves three straight at 141, 157 and 165 pounds, respectively with Bruno and Meuleners bookmarking the match with dominant performances.
Chadron State claimed major decisions in the 141 and 197 pound matches and decisions at 174 and 184 pounds.
NSU will break from dual-meet action to take part in the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on Dec. 15 and 16 before resuming dual competition at the Nebraska-Kearney Duals on Jan. 19. The Wolves dive into NSIC action on Jan. 25, hosting Southwest Minnesota State.
