ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State Huskies put a stop to Northern State's five-game win streak to open the season and handed the Wolves their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss of the year on Saturday, as the Huskies fended off the Wolves 94-84 to cap the opening weekend of NSIC play for both teams.
Despite suffering their first loss of the season, NSU remains 5-1 overall and an even 1-1 on the season. The Huskies kept their unblemished record intact, improving to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the loop.
SCSU jumped out to an early double-digit lead after a Scott Hawkins trey made it a 22-11 ball game. The Huskies kept the lead at double digits through the remainder of the half, stretching it to as many as 18 in the first minute of the second before the Wolves put together a late rally.
NSU slowly chipped away at the lead before cutting it to an eight-point deficit after
Mitch White hit one of two free throw attempts with 6:35 left to play.
The Huskies pushed the lead back out to 14 with just over three minutes left to go and would let the Wolves get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Junior
Dustin Tetzlaff and sophomore
Jared Hannigan paced five players in double figures with 14 points apiece.
Collin Pryor added 12, while both Pryor and Tetzlaff picked up seven rebounds apiece. NSU has yet to lose the battle of the glass this season.
The Huskies were led by 20-point efforts from their back-court duo of Brett Putz and Shaun Jensen. Putz was a perfect 10 of 10 from the line, while Jensen went 6-for-9 from the field and 8 of 10 from the line. The Huskies scored 33 of their 94 points from the charity stripe.
The Wolves return home next weekend to host Wayne State on Friday and Augustana on Saturday in another key NSIC weekend. Action both nights will tip at 8 p.m. in NSU's Wachs Arena.
