ABERDEEN, S.D. – After watching the Mayville State Comets drill their first three and four of their first six three-point attempts en-route to a quick 14-6 lead, the host Northern State University Wolves turned up the defensive intensity, forcing the Comets into 22 turnovers and a 30.8 percent total shooting effort to claim an 88-50 non-conference victory Saturday evening.

The Wolves also got a career-high 18 points from senior Alex Thomas, who went 7-for-14 on the night and 4-for-8 from long range and bested his previous career best by two points.  Thomas led four players – three starters – in double figures, including a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double by junior Collin Pryor and a near-miss double-double from Dustin Tetzlaff, who finished with 16 points and nine boards.

With the win, NSU improved to 4-0 on the young season and will take that record into Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, which begins next weekend.  Saturday's game was an exhibition contest for the Comets, who remain an even 4-4 overall.

After the Comets' initial outburst, the Wolves fought back with a 12-0 run that took NSU from five points down to seven up on the scoreboard.  Thomas sparked the streak with one of his one of his four treys on the night from the deep corner, while Tetzlaff capped it with a layup off a Trent Zomer steal.

Thomas sparked another 11-0 NSU run to start the second half with yet another trey from the left side, while Pryor and Tetzlaff filled in the remaining eight points of the run to take the Wolves from a nine-point lead to a 20-point advantage in the first two and a half minutes of the second stanza.

MSU's Brady Robins momentarily stopped the bleeding with a trey of his own to cut it to a 46-29 NSU lead, but that's as close as the Comets would get as the Wolves pulled steadily away throughout the half.

NSU freshman Michael Emge joined the double-figures club for the first time with his 11 points.  Tydan Storrusten finished with eight points and four assists.  Zomer and Tetzlaff paced a 12-steal effort with three steals apiece.

Mayville State was led by freshman Gus Kueber's game-best 24 points and four blocks.  He also had six rebounds and five of the Comets' 22 turnovers.  Robbins and Eric Shulstad added nine points apiece.

The Wolves hit the road for the first time this season next weekend to open NSIC play.  NSU will face off against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday at 8 p.m. and against St. Cloud State on Saturday in a 6 p.m. tip.
