CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Northern State University Wolves snapped a seven-game losing skid Saturday afternoon with a 75-65 road victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Wolves put three players in double figures and shot better than 50 percent from the floor for the first time in six weeks en-route to their first win since the opening weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
With the victory, the Wolves improved to 6-7 overall and 2-7 in NSIC action. Head coach
Paul Sather also picked up career victory No. 100 in the process. UMC slipped to 5-7 on the year and 1-7 in league play.
Both teams played a back-and-forth battle through the opening portion of the game. UMC took its fourth and final lead of the night on an Almir Krdzalic three-pointer at the 10:14 mark. The Wolves quickly took it back on
Tydan Storrusten's lay-up just ten seconds later. NSU then outscored the Golden Eagles 23-11 over the last ten minutes of the half to go into the break holding a comfortable 41-28 advantage.
The Wolves pushed their lead to as many as 17 on two occasions early in the second half, but kept the Golden Eagles at arm's length throughout the period. UMC sliced the lead to single digits with under two minutes to play, but it was too little, too late. NSU again answered with a lay-up at the other end, followed by a pair of
Tom Parks free throws to put the game safely out of reach.
Sophomore
Collin Pryor paced the Wolves with an 18-point, 10-rebound effort, his sixth double-double of the season. Parks added 13, while sophomore forward
Dustin Tetzlaff added an even dozen, going 4-for-4 from the floor and the free throw line.
As a team, the Wolves shot a season-best 55.1 percent from the field. That effort includes a 5 of 16 effort from long range, meaning NSU converted on a solid 22 of 33 (66.7 percent) of their attempts inside the arc.
UMC was led by Larry Brown, who came off the bench for 17 points and six rebounds. Krdzalic had 13 points, five assists and eight boards, while Adam Hendricks finished with ten points.
The Wolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon in another key NSIC match-up, this time at MSU Moorhead. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
