ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Wolves held the visiting Concordia University-St. Paul Golden Bears to just 78 yards rushing, but gave up 240 yards and three touchdowns through the air, falling to the Golden Bears 27-17 in a Gypsy Days homecoming loss.
The loss drops NSU to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. CU picked up its second win of the season, moving to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Saturday's meeting marked the first time the two teams have met since the 2007 season. The Wolves won that contest by a final score of 15-9.
CU senior wide-out Charles Gilbert hauled in eight catches for 183 yards total yards, most of which came in large chunks. Gilbert caught TD passes of 41, 23 and 44 yards in the first, second and third quarters, respectively, from the arm of junior quarterback Spencer Ohm. Steven King added a field goal in the first and fourth quarters to help seal the win.
The Wolves held a brief lead in the first quarter. After giving up a 44-yard field goal to the Golden Bears on their second drive of the game, NSU answered with a 7-play, 73-yard 3-minute touchdown drive that ended with four straight Montrel Richardson carries.
CU regained the lead on Gilbert's first TD catch of the night, then added distance with his second strike before the Wolves could find the endzone again. This time, true freshman Matt Anderson notched his first career TD from six yards out to close the gap to 17-14.
Neither team would score again until after the break when Ohm again found Gilbert on a deep ball to make it a 24-14 game.
Senior Thomas Parrott knocked in a 36-yard field goal on the Wolves' ensuing drive to score the final NSU points of the game.
After a Golden Bears field goal in the fourth quarter that made it a 27-17 game, the Wolves made an attempt at a comeback in the final three minutes. Facing 4th-and-10 from the NSU 13, senior quarterback Joei Fiegler, spelling Wanner at the QB spot for the final drive, found fellow senior Trent DesLauriers for a 48-yard catch to reach CU territory, but the drive fizzled on three straight incomplete passes after that, allowing CU to take over on downs and run out the clock.
The Wolves, who did not throw an interception for the third straight game, did have one costly turnover in the first quarter. NSU forced the Golden Bears into a 3-and-out on their first drive of the game, but fumbled the punt return. CU recovered the loose ball and turned the mistake into King's first field goal.
Richardson had 19 carries for 90 yards – his third straight game of 90 yards or more – while Wanner had 15 carries for 70 yards as the Wolves tallied 187 yards on the ground. Defensively, senior Adam Carvajal led the way with seven tackles and a pass break-up. Junior Mike Bogdanovich also led a trio of Wolves with five total tackles, including a 10-yard sack and two total tackles for a loss. As a team, the Wolves recorded eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage for losses totaling 47 yards.
CU senior Trevor Glomski notched a game-best nine tackles, while Taylor Selby got in on eight.
The Wolves, still looking for their first win under head coach
