ABERDEEN, S.D. – Maggie Fedor's goal with just over two minutes left in regulation broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Northern State University Wolves to a 1-0 win over Wayne State on Sunday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action. The win was NSU's first since a Sept. 6 home win over Nebraska-Kearney and the team's first in NSIC play.
The Wolves now stand at 3-4-3 on the year and 1-1-1 in the loop, while WSC slipped to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in league action.
Despite a decided edge in both shots and shots on goal, the Wolves were unable to find the net until the 88th minute. Fedor, who had 7 of the team's 11 shots on goal, finally put one of those away when she picked up her own rebound and slid the ball past WSC goalkeeper Emily Walker into the right side of the net for the go-ahead goal.
The Wolves had plenty of other chances throughout the wind-swept game. Senior
Summer Swan banged a hard shot off the crossbar, while sophomore
Haley Burns was just inches away from a go-ahead goal in the second half, but missed high. NSU claimed an overall 24-6 shot advantage on the day.
Junior goalkeeper
Dee Wood made three saves in the net to notch her third shutout of the season.
The Wolves now take to the road, continuing their swing through the NSIC slate at Minnesota State, Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State next weekend. Saturday's match with the Mavericks is slated for a 3 p.m. start while Sunday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Marshall, Minn.
