MORRIS, Minn. – The Northern State University baseball squad earned their first sweep of the season Wednesday in Morris, Minn. sweeping the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars in non-conference action by scores of 7-3 and 13-7.
With the wins the Wolves improve to 7-23 overall on the year, and their conference record remains the same at 1-15.
Wolves starter
Nathan Zacher earned the win in the first half of the doubleheader, going seven innings for the complete game victory. He allowed just three earned runs on seven hits while striking out six Cougar batters, and he also walked three and hit one batter to improve his record to 1-2 on the year.
Offensively, the Wolves got their best production from the top of the order in leadoff batter
Aaron Kappes,
James Paul, and
Mitch Locke who accounted for eight of the Wolves' 14 hits, five of the Wolves' seven RBI, and three runs scored. Paul went 4-5 with three RBI coming off a two-run double in the second inning and another RBI double in the fifth. He also scored a run.
Kappes went 2-5 with two runs scored, and
Mitch Locke went 2-5 with two RBI.
Trent Bestland earned the win in the second game to move his season record to 1-2 overall. He worked through 5-1/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Nick Wallentiny pitched 2/3 on scoreless relief and
Tom Keiser pitched one inning, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
Offensively, the Wolves were able to get 13 runs on 13 hits, with nine different players recording at least one hit in the game.
Mitch Locke went 2-2 with a two runs scored and
Tom Keiser went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI triple in the third inning.
Lucas Jung only went 1-4, but his one hit was an RBI single in the fifth inning, and he also recorded two RBI sacrifice flys to knock in three total runs on the day.
The Wolves are back in action this weekend when they travel to St. Cloud, Minn. to take on St. Cloud State in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
