ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Upper Iowa University Peacocks used 70 kills and a .307 team hitting percentage to outlast host Northern State University Saturday afternoon, taking a 3-2 victory over the Wolves by set scores of 16-25, 25-14, 25-21, 21-25, 15-8 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball action.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Wolves, now 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference. UIU improved to 12-10 on the year and 3-5 in conference play with their second straight road win.
NSU's
Jordan Schaffer put down a career-high 21 kills while hitting a solid .462 on the night. The junior also had 18 digs and was in on a pair of the Wolves' eight team blocks. Junior
Kayla Ysteboe also added 13 kills for the Wolves.
After taking a 25-16 win in the first set, the Wolves faltered in sets two and three, allowing the Peacocks to bolt to and early lead in the second and battling through six ties and three lead changes in the third. NSU bounced back in the fourth, rallying from and early deficit to claim the eventual 25-21 win to knot the match at two sets apiece.
The fifth and final set, however, belonged entirely to the Peacocks, as they bolted to a 9-4 lead en-route to the 15-8 set win and 4-3 match victory.
UIU was led by 21 kills from Shea Meyermann and another 20 from Nicky Brown. Setter Keri Vance dished out 61 assists on the night.
The Wolves now face four straight road games starting next Wednesday as they take on the University of Mary in another key NSIC match-up. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Bismarck.
