BOX SCORE
ABERDEEN, S.D. – The defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (6-1, 6-0 NSIC) looked every bit deserving of their no. 8 national ranking Saturday, as they rolled up 378 rushing yards en route to a 42-0 victory over the Northern State Wolves (1-6, 1-5 NSIC) during Gypsy Days.
It was the first time the Wolves have failed to score any points since Oct. 7, 2006 when the Wolves lost 7-0 to Wayne State.
The two teams combined for nine turnovers in the game, but Minnesota-Duluth was able to capitalize on the Northern State mistakes, while the Wolves were unable to score any point off the UMD turnovers.
Isaac Odim got the Bulldogs on the board first with a 6-yard run with 2:28 in the first quarter, giving the visitors an early 6-0 lead. The score would be 7-0 after the David Nadeu point after was good.
He then added another score in the form of a 1-yard run with 3:45 remaining in the second quarter, giving the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead after the Nadeu extra point.
They would add another score before half when freshman quarterback Chase Vogler scampered 14 yards with 0:52 remaining in the frame. Nadeu's extra point would be good to bring the score to 21-0, which stayed until halftime.
The Wolves would hold them out of the end zone until the 3:00 mark in the third quarter when Vogler found Jake Coauette for a 4-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 28-0 after the Nadeu extra point.
Odim would score his third touchdown of the game on another 1-yard run with 10:55 to go in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 35-0 UMD after another Nadeau extra point.
Brian Hanson rounded out the scoring in the game when he found paydirt on a 1-yard run with 6:52 remaining in the game, to bring the game to 42-0, which would stand as the final.
The Wolves were only able to amass 163 yards of total offense against a stout UMD defense, with 66 of those yards coming on the ground.
Montrel Richardson carried 17 times for 53 yards to lead the Northern State rushing attack.
Trent DesLauriers recorded four catches for 35 yards to lead the NSU receiving corps on the afternoon. DesLauriers broke his previous season-highs in catches and receiving yards during the game.
Joei Fiegler ended his day going 12-33 for 75 yards and three interceptions. He was also sacked three times.
Defensively, reigning NSIC Defensive Player of the Week David Alvarez led the squad, recording seven tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Chris Hurd had a game-high 12 tackles (seven solo) and had one tackle for loss, an interception, and a pass break up.
The Bulldogs, entering the game with only one turnover on the year, had two interceptions and three fumbles on the offensive side of the ball.
Isaac Odim led the Bulldogs offense, as he accounted for 228 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon.
The Wolves will look to rebound next week when they make the trip north to Bismarck, N.D. to take on the Marauders of the University of Mary at 2:30 p.m.
