LET ME 'TREL YA SOMETHIN': Northern State junior running back
Montrel Richardson continues to be the main catalyst for the Northern State offense and now has 977 all-purpose yards through five games this season, an average of 195.4 yards per game, a figure that ranks him 7th nationally.
He has got a big chunk of that yardage on the ground and now has 514 rushing yards on 74 carries (6.9 ypc) and two rushing touchdowns.
He has been on of NSU quarterback
Joei Fiegler's favorite targets recently, leading the team with seven catches for 68 yards in the Wolves' 42-20 loss to Bemidji State Saturday.
His signature game of the season was on the road against Upper Iowa where he notched 289 all-purpose yards (157 rushing) including a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown and 47-yard scamper.
He matched that performance a week later with another 289 all-purpose yard performance, including notching 174 rushing yards.
He's currently sixth in the NSIC in rushing yards and yards per game and third in all-purpose yards and yards per game.
I GOT FIVE ON IT: Junior captain wideout
Trent DesLauriers is currently sixth in the NSIC in receptions per game, averaging 5.20 per contest and 10th in the conference in receiving yards per game with his 62.4 per game average.
He is having a career year and needs just three catches and 39 receiving yards to match his career-highs in those categories.
He has already set career-highs for receptions and yards in a game on September 5th against Winona State when he went for seven catches and 96 receiving yards.
TOMMY BOY: Northern State junior kicker
Thomas Parrott, a junior from Tampa, Fla., was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List prior to the 2009 season. A 2008 Second Team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference selectionafter being an Honorable Mention in 2007, Parrott has connected on 59 of 64 PAT's in past two seasons. He earned NSIC Player of the Week honors as a Freshman after connecting on 7 of 7 PAT's and adding a FG in the Wolves 52-9 win over Minnesota-Crookston on October 20, 2007. Parrot donates his time to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and volunteers as a chemistry tutor to Northern State students, and also participated in the United Way and Northern State University Day of Champions event to assist with various community service projects in the Aberdeen area.
ABOUT NORTHERN STATE: The Wolves have gotten off to their second-straight 0-5 start after opening up with now nationally ranked Missouri Western State and formerly ranked Winona State, and then losing close battles with Upper Iowa and St. Cloud State in successive weeks before losing to Bemidji State 42-20 last week.
The Wolves haven't put together a complete game yet this season and have failed to either get the offense going or failed to stop the opposition when the offense is firing on all cylinders.
In the NSIC the Wolves are: 12th in scoring offense (20.6 pts/gm), 11th in pass offense (197.6 yds/gm), 14th in passing efficiency (97.3), 10th in rush offense (133.2 yds/gm), and 11th in total offense (330.4 yds/gm).
Defensively in the conference they are: 14th in scoring defense (42.6 pts/gm), 11th in pass defense (226.2 yds/gm), 14th in pass defense efficiency (187.6), 14th in rushing defense (252.2 yds/gm), and 13th in total defense (478.4 yds/gm).
They are 14th in turnover margin (-8).
ABOUT MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON: The Golden Eagles, much like the Wolves, have gotten off to a similar rough start with their only win coming against NAIA Mayville State.
In the conference on offense they are: 14th in scoring (16.8 pts/gm), 13th in pass offense (144.6 yds/gm), 13th in pass efficiency (102.0), 9th in rush offense (147.0 yds/gm), and 13th in total offense (291.6 yds/gm).
Defensively they are: 11th in scoring (35.8 pts/gm), 13th in passing defense (255.6 yds/gm), 11th in defensive passsing efficiency (155.5), 5th in rushing defense (136.4 yds/gm), and 10th in total defense (392.0 yds/gm).
They are 5th in the conference with a +2 turnover margin.
FUMBLEROOSKI!: In Northern State's only loss to the Golden Eagles back on October 21, 2000, the Wolves actually out-gained the Golden Eagles by a 358-196 margin, and churned out 23 first downs compared to UMC's seven during the game.
The Wolves also racked up 269 rushing yards to Crookston's 136, and had three rushing touchdowns to Crookston's one. All signs should have pointed to a Wolves win.....right?
That would probably have been the case had the Wolves not fumbled
SIX times in the game, with each one being recovered by UMC.
The biggest fumble, coming at the 8:44 mark of the 4th quarter, was returned for a 32-yard touchdown by the Golden Eagles to take the lead 25-21, with that score staying as the final.
STOP THAT SKID: The Wolves have lost ten-straight games since their homecoming win vs. Minnesota, Crookston last season on October 4th, and have now lost 16 of their last 17 games dating back to 2007. The Wolves have never lost ten-straight games before, and this is Northern State's worst losing streak since the team had a 12-game winless streak between 1927-1928.
DID YOU KNOW?: Montrel Richardson has averaged 195.4 all-purpose yards per game through the first five games of the season. If he keeps up this pace through the remaining games he would finish with
2,149 all-purpose yards, eclipsing the previous Northern State season-high of 2,146 yards set by
Tyrone Morgan in 1998.
HANKY-HATERS: The Wolves lead the NSIC in fewest penalty yards per game by only averaging 30.2 in each contest. Through five games they have only committed 21 penalties for 151 total yards, and average of 4.2 flags/game.
JARK EYES HISTORY BOOKS: Senior wide receiver and Aberdeen native
Brian Jark etched his name into the Northern State record books on September 5th against Winona State, becoming the school's all-time leading receiver with 218 career receptions. He is still closing in on all-time records for TD receptions, reception yards, and a host of other NSIC records. He trails Damien Hoffman of Minnesota Morris by seven receptions for the all-time NSIC lead in that category. He needs just 14 receiving yards to eclipse 2,000 for his NSIC career.
