BISMARCK, N.D. - The Northern State University soccer squad battled through wind and rain, but fell victim to a trio of second-half goals Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 decision to the host University of Mary squad in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both teams.
The Wolves fell to an even 4-4 on the year and 0-1 in league action with the loss. The Mauraders claimed their first win of the season with the victory, moving to 1-6 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC.
NSU drew first blood in the contest when
Kaylee McDonald drove a shot into the top of the net in the 35th minute to tally her fourth goal of the season. The score, which came off a
Summer Swan assist, now gives the freshman a share of the team lead in goals this season.
NSU held the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first half before the Mauraders tied things up just 3:55 into the second period. Mary's Megan Wilson picked up a deflected shot in front of the net and slipped it past NSU goaltender
Dee Wood to make it a 1-1 game.
Alyssa Deutscher put the Mauraders ahead in the 68th minute, taking advantage of a scramble in front of the net and a pass from Wilson to drive home the game-winner. Amanda Schreiber the added an insurance goal in the 84th minute off a Megan Hellrung corner kick.
Offensively, NSU managed just three shots on the day while giving up 17 to the Mauraders. Thirteen of those shots came in the second half. The Mauraders also held a slight edge in corner kicks, taking five on the day to NSU's four.
NSU, playing through the second of three straight weeks on the road, had nine players who saw 80 or more minutes of playing time in Sunday's contest. The Wolves remain on the road next weekend, taking on Wayne State on Saturday before facing Augustana on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
