WAYNE, Neb. - The Northern State men's basketball team improved to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in NSIC play with a 75-68 win over Wayne State College (6-4, 2-2 NSIC) on Saturday night. The Wolves kept the Wildcats to just 37.3% shooting from the field and forced 14 turnovers.
For just the second time this season, the Wolves had to come from behind for the win. They were down 31-32 at the half despite out-shooting the Wildcats from the field. Wayne hit the offensive boards in the half, resulting in 13 second chance points. WSC's Bryce Caldwell sunk a trio of three-pointers to lead his team with 11 first half points. The Wolves had a more balanced scoring attack, with buckets spread out between multiple players.
Kevin Ratzsch and
Craig Nelson lit up the second half, combining for 5-of-9 three-point shooting and 31 of the team's 44 points. The Wolves took a 57-49 lead by the nine minute mark of the second half. Northern's largest lead of the game was 67-55 with three minutes to play in the game.
Ratzsch and Nelson each scored 22 points in NSU's 75-68 win. Ratzsch shot 7-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-4 three-pointers. He also had four blocked shots and a set of steals. Nelson connected on 6-of-11 shots, draining five shots from beyond the arc.
Levi Hamilton led the Wolves with eight rebounds.
The Wildcats had four players finish in double figures for scoring. Bryce Caldwell also hit five three-pointers on the night and topped WSC's scorers with 17 points, adding 11 rebounds for the double double. Matt Rathje also had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
