ABERDEEN, S.D. – In another hot shooting night for the Wolves, Northern State increased its season-opening winning streak to four games with an 83-68 decision over Lake Superior State (0-4). Northern was 30-of-52 from the field in the win. The game was the finale of the last Wachs Classic to be played in Aberdeen, S.D.
Craig Nelson (Sr., Mayville, N.D.) hit five straight three-pointers in the first half to give the Wolves a decided advantage over the Lakers. His first came at the 12:03 mark and, mixed with a trey from Dan DeWitt, his fifth marked a 15-7 NSU run that gave the Wolves a 37-18 lead with seven minutes to play. The Wolves also dominated the boards 18-9 in the half before taking a 53-36 lead at the intermission.
The Lakers opened the second half with an 11-4 run to bring their deficit down to just ten points, 57-47. Three Northern field goals made it a 7-0 run for NSU and gave the momentum back to the home team. The scoring continued until the Wolves managed a 20-point 75-55 lead with under five minutes to play. The game wrapped up with fast play from end to end but the Wolves maintained control and took the win 83-68.
had 12 points, a team high six rebounds, and dished out four assists. Also with four assists was Kyle Schwan. The Wolves were 30-of-52 from the field for 57.7 percent and hit 12 three-pointers.
Lake Superior State was led by Mark Morse, who hit six three-pointers and finished with 22 points and four assists. Ryan Kuhl had 16 points and led the Lakers with eight rebounds. The team shot 45.2 percent on the night (19-42).
Northern has a day off before they host Jamestown College on Monday, November 26 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be the last non-conference dual before NSIC play starts up next weekend.
