Bob Salmi started as an assistant coach for the Northern State cross county team in 2006. His cross country coaching career began at Minneapolis Marshall University High School in 1968. He moved to Aberdeen and became the Central High School head cross country coach in 1971, where he served for 33 years. He retired from the Aberdeen Public Schools in 2003. His Aberdeen Central boys teams won the ESD Conference championship 4 times and were State class AA runners up twice.

Bob graduated from high school in Orr, Minn, where he earned Minnesota All State 8-Man football honors. He was a four-year member of the Concordia College, Moorhead  football team, where he graduated in 1964 with a bachelors degree in physical education and biology. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1969 with a Master's of Education degree in physical education.

Bob and his wife, Maryan, have three grown sons and 5 grandchildren.
