Mike Shafer

Mike Shafer enters his third season as the offensive line coach at Northern State in 2013.

“He brings several years of college coaching experience and a passion for the game to the table," said Head Coach Tom Dosch. " In addition, his regional and national recruiting knowledge will be a major asset to our program. We are excited to have Mike on our coaching staff.”

Shafer came to the Wolves after spending ten seasons as an assistant coach at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. There, Shafer worked with all facets of the NDSCS offense and was named as the Assistant Head Coach in 2007. He served as the offensive coordinator since 2006 and was also the offensive line coach for the past three seasons. Shafer guided the passing game for the 2004 and 2005 seasons and was the quarterbacks/running backs coach from 2003-07. He also coached the wide receivers during his first three seasons with the Wildcats and has overseen the kick return and punt coverage throughout his tenure.

Shafer guided an offense that ranked 23rd nationally in offensive production, racking up 371.4 yards per game in 2010. That offensive unit also scored 33.9 points per game and 6.0 yards per play.

He also had a hand in developing ten offensive NDSCS players into NCAA Division I signees over the past four years. Shafer produced nine All-Americans and 42 All-Region players in his time with the Wildcats and helped lead the team to three Graphic Edge Bowl appearances.

A native of Bismarck, N.D., Shafer played collegiately at North Dakota State and the University of Mary, where he earned All-Conference honors as a running back for the Marauders. He graduated from the University of Mary in 1999 and earned his master’s degree from NDSU in 2007.

Shafer and his wife Jennifer have one son, Payton.
