Minnesota native Matt McLagan begins his fifth season with the Wolves and second season as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach in 2016. McLagan came to NSU after one season at Jamestown College, where he was the linebackers coach and the strength and conditioning coordinator for the Jimmies. Previously, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference institution St. Cloud State.
In his first season has defensive coordinator, McLagan and the Wolves sat third in the league with 19 total interceptions on the year. He was instrumental in Northern’s shutout of the University of Mary and defeat over No. 18 Minnesota Duluth. A total of six defensive players made the NSIC All-Conference team’s including first teamer Chad Stoterau and second teamer Cameron Pudwill.Â
With the Wolves, Matt has coached six NSIC All-Conferencerecipients, including 2014 first team honoree Chad Stoterau. After the 2014 season, McLagan was promoted from Defensive Line Coach to Defensive Coordinator.Â
A native of Minneapolis, Minn., McLagan’s playing career took him to SCSU, where he played inside linebacker for the Huskies from 2004 to 2008. He earned All-North Central Conference honors in 2007 and was an All-NSIC pick in 2008 after the Huskies joined the league following the dissolution of the NCC. He was named a team captain for the 2008 season when the Huskies went 7-4 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC North Division behind eventual national champion Minnesota-Duluth.
McLagan graduated from SCSU in 2009 with a degree in physical education and sport science.
