Calvin Ellis enters his second season as a graduate assistant coach with the Wolves in the fall of 2017.
Ellis joins the Wolves after coaching stops at Northwestern Oklahoma State and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. He was also the head coach of the 2016 Lockhaven Lighting in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate League. He guided the team to a first place finish in the regular season, while five Lightning players were selected for the MACL All-Star Game.
As the assistant coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Ellis worked with hitters, outfielders, and catchers, where he designed and implemented a new strength and conditioning program, as well as performed first base coaching duties during games.
Under this leadership, the Norsemen saw seven batters finish the season over .400. The team combined for a .389 average with 73 home runs, 126 doubles, and a .617 slugging percentage, resulting in five players awarded with all-conference selections and four players with honorable mentions awards. A total of 13 members of the sophomore class moved on to the 4-year college level, six at NCAA Division I and seven at NCAA Division II.
The success of the strength and conditioning program was evident in the increased offensive power statistics such as a .108 increase in slugging percentage over the previous year’s .509, along with 33 more doubles, ten more triples, 30 more home runs, and 40 more stolen bases.
Coach Ellis served the 2014-2015 season as a volunteer assistant at Northwestern Oklahoma State University under 11 time coach of the year Sam Carel.
Prior to beginning his coaching career, Ellis graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Criminal Justice in 2014. During his time as a Ranger, Ellis primarily played first base and boasted a career .318 average at the plate. In 2013, Ellis was awarded Northwestern’s Junior Athlete of the Year award.
Prior to attending Northwestern, Ellis attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. He was a member of NEO’s 2011 Region II runner up team (38-19) and the 2012 OACC Conference championship team (35-14). While playing for the Golden Norseman, Ellis split his time between first base, left field, and designated hitter where he worked his way to a career .353 average.
