Bio Information: Deacon Burns was both a member of the football and baseball team’s at NSU playing two seasons for the Wolves. As a member of the football team, Burns appeared in 22 games with 1,082 yards rushing and 554 yards receiving. He tallied ten touchdowns and averaged 49.2 yards rushing and 25.2 yards receiving per game. Burns also added 495 yards off punt returns and 497 yards off kick returns.
On the diamond, Burns appeared in 92 games for the Wolves. He hit .423 in his two seasons with 131 hits, 109 runs scored, 92 RBI, 37 walks, 35 stolen bases, 30 homeruns, 22 doubles, and five triples. He notched a .816 slugging percentage, with a career high .910 mark in 2004, which ranked third in the nation that season. He also ranked eighth in the nation in batting average (.476) and home runs per game (0.37). Burns still holds the single season school record for homeruns with 16 and batting average with a .476 mark, and the career record in slugging percentage (.816).
Professional Information: Drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 26
th round in the 2004 draft as the 781
st overall pick. Played six years in the minors with Elizabethton, Beloit, Fort Meyers, Shrev-Bossier, and Lincoln. He appeared in one game for the Minnesota Twins in 2006 during spring training, scoring one run with one at bat. In the minors, he appeared in 309 games where he hit .266 with 315 hits, 192 runs scored, 73 doubles, 20 triples, 29 homeruns, 160 RBI, 41 stolen bases, and 97 walks. He also recorded a .331 on base percentage and .434 slugging percentage. The outfielder recorded 446 put outs, with a .974 field percentage.
