Pre-NSU: Smith is a 2008 graduate of Philip High School in Philip, S.D. He lettered four years in football and was selected All-Conference all four years. Smith was a two time All-State selection who received the Outstanding Defensive Player Award and the Scottie Award. Smith lettered in wrestling, where he was a State Champion, a two time captain, a MVP Award recipient and a Scottie Award recipient.
