WALLHEAD, HOFER RESPOND TO WSC GOAL IN SENIOR DAY VICTORY

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two NSU goals inside the final 10 minutes of play proved enough to drop the Wildcats of Wayne State College 2-1 this afternoon. All three goals were scored in the last 20 minutes of play, with Jaylee Hofer scoring the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute of play (assisted by an Ella Ready throw-in and a Kylie Albert cross). NSU notched two goals on 11 shots (three shots on goal), four assists, nine fouls, two corners and one yellow card on Senior Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a quiet first half from both sides, the Wolves got into a groove at the start of the second half, putting pressure on the Wildcats early with multiple shots to open the final 45 minutes
  • But it was Olivia Thompson who recorded the first goal of the game, snagging a perfect pick from NSU defender Lydia Nordquist that left only the ball between her and NSU goalkeeper Audrey Burns
  • But with 10 shots put up in the second half, the Wolves were itching to get one to go
  • They would respond seven minutes later with a Wallhead goal off assists from both Kailyn Poppen and Lauren Youngquist, two seniors who were honored earlier this afternoon
  • But Northern State continued to pressure the Wildcat defenders, keeping the ball on their side of the pitch before a quick throw-in from Ready found Albert to give Hofer a perfect cross to take the lead with less than four minutes to play, her fifth goal of the season
  • Albert has made her presence known on the pitch this season, tallying an NSU team-high five assists
  • Both Hofer and Wallhead boasted the same stat line of one goal, three shots and one shot on goal, while Voss followed with two shots in the battle
  • Thompson tallied two of three WSC shots, while Addison Vodnansky also recorded a shot in the loss
  • Burns spent all 90 minutes inside the net and contributed two saves
