Three Major Decision Wins Propel Northern State Past Minnesota State

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University wrestling team rallied in the final three weights against Minnesota State for a 7-point victory over the Mavericks. With the win, the Wolves close out their home season with a 5-1 record from Wachs Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The evening opened with a pair of exhibition matches for the Wolves, including a 6-2 decision victory for Marshall VanTassel, competing at 285 pounds
  • Northern struck first at 125 pounds in a 5-3 decision victory for true freshman Sloan Johannsen
  • The Mavericks took the lead in the following bout with a major decision, however the Wolves quickly responded
  • NSU's ranked wrestlers, Braydon Mogle and Wyatt Turnquist rattled off a pair of major decision wins of their own
  • No. 12 Mogle downed Colton Hush, while No. 4 Turnquist defeated No. 14 Walker Bents, each by scores of 9-1
  • Northern led 7-4 through the first four weights, however Minnesota State rallied back taking a 14-11 lead with three straight wins at 157, 165, and 174 pounds
  • Damen Pape regained the lead for NSU with a commanding 13-3 major decision victory over Evan Farley in the 184-pound bout and the Wolves did not look back
  • Tyson Lien came out ready to score, called for an early caution, however that didn't tame the Wolves 197-pounder who tallied a 7-1 decision victory over Grant Cook
  • Nathan Schauer stepped on the mat with the Wolves leading by four and secured the dual victory with a 5-1 decision win over Tanner Gaffey
  • The win by Schauer marked the second time this season the Wolves heavyweight sealed the dual for NSU, with the first coming against Augustana in mid-January

The Wolves will return to action Saturday, March 1 at the NCAA Super Region V Tournament. Competition opens at 10 a.m. from the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana University.
