Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Two Northern State University Wolves grabbed All-American honors on Friday, advancing to the placing rounds of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Wyatt Turnquist and
Cole Huss will continue their NCAA quest after both going 2-1 on the opening day of competition.
DAY 1 STORYLINES
- Devin Bahr opened his day with a hard fought loss to 6-seed Nathan Smith of Pitt-Johnstown in a 4-3 decision and moved on to a pigtail wrestle-back against familiar foe Eric Faught of Upper Iowa
- Bahr tallied a 5-3 sudden victory, however fell to 3-seed Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma in a 6-3 decision to conclude his championships appearance
- Both Wyatt Turnquist and Cole Huss opened their days with wins; Turnquist handily defeating Dallas Wilson of Mount Olive in a 21-2 technical fall (3:56) and Huss with a sudden victory win by fall over Bryce Walker of UNC Pembroke (7:56)
- Turnquist faced off against 2-seed and 2022 157-pound National Champion Josiah Rider of Adams State in the quarterfinals, falling in an 8-3 decision
- Huss entered his second sudden victory round of the day in the quarterfinals, dropping a 3-1 match to 4-seed Dominic Murphy of St. Cloud State
- The returning NCAA qualifiers each entered the blood round, looking to survive, advancing, and secure the All-American nod
- Turnquist took control of his match early, defeating Jacob Simpson of West Liberty in a 9-0 major decision
- Huss ran away with the match late in the third period, notching an 8-2 decision victory over Anthony Yacovetti of Lander
- Northern enters day two with 14.0 team points, sitting in 20th overall
