Pezonella Walks Off Hornets with 3-Run Homerun

Edmond, OK – After dropping the season opener last night, the Northern State baseball team responded in a big way on Saturday afternoon with a 9-6 walk-off victory over Emporia State. The Wolves hit a pair of homeruns on the day, but Niko Pezonella secured the win for the Wolves in walk-off fashion with a 3-run homer to center field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emporia State was the first team to put a run on the scoreboard on Saturday afternoon as Jake Bucovetsky sent a solo-homerun to right field in the top of the second inning; Northern State was quick to respond and tie the game in the bottom half of the inning as Austin Portner hit a double to left field, scoring Reece Ragatz from third base
  • Max Otto pitched scoreless innings in the third and fourth innings, however Gibrian Pena was able to connect on a 2-run homer to left field to put the Hornets back on top 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning
  • Otto and the Northern defense regrouped in the top of the sixth inning to send the ESU batters down in order, including a pair of strikeouts to start the inning; Ragatz brought the game back to even at three runs a piece in the bottom half of the sixth inning with a 2-run homerun to left center
  • A sacrifice fly by Kadyn Williams in the top of the seventh scored Noah Geekie to put Emporia State back on top 4-3
  • The Northern bats once again had an answer for the Hornets in a back and forth game as Ragatz knocked a triple to center field to give NSU a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh to score Karson Hesser and Jordan DeMarce; shortly after a pair of wild pitches put ESU back in front 6-5 in the top of the eighth inning
  • A sacrifice fly by Ragatz scored DeMarce in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game before Niko Pezonella recorded the biggest hit of the game, a walk-off 3-run homerun to center field, giving the Wolves a 9-6 win in Edmond
  • Northern State scored their nine runs off 13 hits and committed only one error defensively; Mitchell Tolk took the mound in relief in the top of the eighth inning to pitch 1.1 innings and earn the win for the Wolves

Tomorrow's first pitch between the Wolves and Gorillas has been moved up to 10 a.m. at Wendell Simmons Field in Edmond, Oklahoma.
