Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University fall teams had a successful semester at home, in the Northern Sun, and in the classroom. In total Wolves football, soccer, and volleyball went 14-6-3 at home this season. In addition, the fall teams tallied 17 all-conference performances, two all-region nods, 55 NSIC All-Academic honors, ten CSC Academic All-District® honors, and two CSC Academic All-America® recipients with awards still rolling in for football and volleyball.

The Northern State Wolves went 5-6 overall and 3-2 from Dacotah Bank Stadium in the fall of 2023. They tallied a comeback victory over Wayne State in mid-October (28-26), tallied home victories against UMary (41-10) and Minot State (46-9) over Gypsy Days, spoiled Southwest Minnesota State’s homecoming (24-17), and sealed their season with a 44-20 victory over Northern Michigan in their first non-conference contest in over ten years. 

Seven single game, season, and career school records were tied or broken this past fall. New school record holders include Jacob Van Landingham for single game pass completion percentage against Minot State (91.7%), Trey King for single game tackles for a loss against Minot State (5.0), Dakota Larson for single game receptions against Northern Michigan (14), career receiving yards (3,660), and career receiving touchdowns (31), Hank Kraft for single season yards per rush (7.4), and Dewaylon Ingram for single season receiving yards (1,220).

Season Accolades

The Northern State soccer program with 9-4-5 overall and 8-1-5 in the Northern Sun finishing third in the NSIC Standings; the program’s highest finish since the 2007 season where they took second. The Wolves kicked off their home slate with a 1-0 victory over Minot State, tied Bemidji State, Minnesota Duluth, and No. 10 Minnesota State, and closed out the regular season with three wins over Southwest Minnesota State (2-0), Augustana (1-0), and UMary (1-0). 

NSU was named to the NCAA Regional Ranking list each week and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Central Region Tournament. Alexus Townsend became the Northern State school record holder for career ties (15) and career shutouts (23) with one season to play in the maroon and gold. Six Wolves garnered national recognition on the USC All-Region and CSC Academic All-District® and Academic All-America® teams listed in the accolades below.

Season Accolades

The Northern State volleyball team went 19-9 overall, 11-7 in the NSIC, and 8-2 from Wachs Arena in 2023. The Wolves finished fifth in the NSIC and faced off against regional qualifier No. 8 St. Cloud State. Northern faced eight top-25 opponents recording wins over Minnesota Duluth when they were ranked seventh and 14th. 

NSU was named to the NCAA Regional Ranking list each week and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The duo of Abby Brooks and Abby Meister broke match school records of solo blocks (6 against Truman State) and digs (41 against Texas A&M-Kingsville). In addition, Northern saw preseason all-tournament recognition for Abby Meister and Morissen Samuels at the Black Hills Invite and Samuels, Meister, and Keri Walker at the Blossom Classic.

Season Accolades

The Northern State men’s and women’s cross country teams took on six meets in 2023 with the men placing sixth and women placing eighth from the NSIC Championships. The Wolves recorded a top-25 finish by at least one student-athlete in each regular season meet. 

Megan Pickering and Josh Martin led the way from the NSIC Championships with a pair of all-conference performances. Martin took fourth earning first team accolades with his time of 24:35.60 in the 8k, while Pickering placed 17th on the second team with her time of 21:38.20 in the 6k. 

The Wolves closed out their year placing 19th (women) and 24th (men) from the NCAA Central Region Championship in Joplin, Missouri.
