Wolves Claim Second Consecutive Dragon Invite Title

Moorhead, Minn. – The Northern State swim team entered the day leading the field and ended the day leading the field as they earned their second consecutive team-title at the Dragon Invite. Throughout the two days of competition the Wolves compiled seven individual wins, one relay win, 26 individual top-5 finishes, and nine top-5 relay finishes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Haley Osborne started the day for the Wolves with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, hitting the wall in a time of 1:59.97
  • Northern did not have to wait long for their first win of the day as Maddie Gonzales swam to a win in the second event of the day, the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:01.47
  • Lilly Grebner won her first of four events on the day with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.13
  • Lauren Forsyth (2:18.83) and Hannah Kiernan (2:29.43) earned a pair of top-5 finishes in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing second and fourth respectively
  • Hannah Rodts was the lone Wolf competing in the 1,650-yard freestyle, claiming a third-place finish with a swim of 20:23.64
  • In the 50-yard freestyle, Osborne (25.09) and Delaney Ryken (25.18) rounded out the top-3 with a second and third-place finish respectively
  • Grebner earned her second win of the day in the 200-yard IM (2:12.66) and was followed by Gonzales who hit the wall in fourth-place and a time of 2:21.18
  • The Wolves ended the morning session of competition with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of Ryken, Osborne, Forsyth, and Grebner finished with a time of 3:37.98
  • Northern State began the evening session of competition with a runner-up finish in the 400-yard medley relay as the team of Gonzales, Grebner, Forsyth, and Ryken hit the wall in a time of 4:12.71
  • Osborne earned another third-place finish with a time of 5:26.37 in the 500-yard freestyle
  • Gonzales (28.99) and Mia Fursedonne (29.31) claimed another pair of top-3 finishes for NSU, finishing second and third-place in the 50-yard backstroke
  • In the 50-yard breaststroke Grebner swam to her third victory of the day with a time of 32.00, while Mayson Sheldon was close behind as she tied for second-place with a time of 32.62
  • Grebner earned her fourth and final win of the day with the fastest time in the 50-yard butterfly (27.11), she was joined in the top-5 by Forsyth who swam to a fourth-place finish and time of 28.00
  • Fursedonne was the top Northern swimmer in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming to an eighth-place finish and time of 58.52
  • Osborne earned a runner-up finish in the 100-yard IM, hitting the wall with a time of 1:04.32
  • Northern State closed the 2023 Dragon Invite with a runner-up finish in 800-yard freestyle relay as the team of Ryken, Osborne, Gonzales, and Grebner swam to a time of 8:23.55

UP NEXT
The Northern State swim team will return to dual-meet competition next Saturday as they travel to Marshall, Minnesota, to face Southwest Minnesota State. The meet is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Don Palm Natatorium.
