Northern Rally Falls Short in Closing Seconds in Minot

Minot, N.D. – Rianna Fillipi gave Northern State their first lead of the game with 1.5 seconds left in the game, however a turnaround jump shot at the buzzer by Natasha Elliott gave Minot State a 67-66 victory. Northern's comeback attempt ended with a 13-5 scoring run to end the game, as well as holding a 20-13 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Minot State grabbed an early 8-3 advantage in the first five minutes of the first quarter, the lone basket for the Wolves in the opening minutes was an Alayna Benike 3-pointer
  • With five early points from Laurie Rogers, the Wolves were able to cut the Beaver lead back down to one with 1:36 remaining in the opening period
  • The Beavers led by as many as ten points in the second period, however the Wolves were able to claw back within five points by out-scoring Minot State 11-7 in the final 4:16 of the first half
  • Trailing by nine points with 4:30 remaining in the game, Northern State ended the game on a 13-5 scoring run; the Wolves shot 4-6 from the field, 1-1 from 3-point range, and 4-4 from the free throw line during the scoring run
  • Rianna Fillipi knocked down her first 3-pointer of the game with 1.5 seconds remaining, giving Northern their first lead of the game; Minot State advanced the ball with a time-out and an in-bounds pass to Natasha Elliott set up a game-winning turnaround jump shot at the buzzer

UP NEXT
Northern State will return to Aberdeen and Wachs Arena next weekend for the final two home games of the 2022 calendar year. The Wolves will host the Golden Eagles of Minnesota Crookston on Friday evening with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off scheduled. Northern will then close out the weekend with a home match-up against the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon, with a 4 p.m. tip-off scheduled.
