No. 17 Wolves Head South for 2022-23 Opener

Aberdeen, S.D. – The No. 17 Northern State University wrestling team gets rolling this weekend in Oklahoma, kicking off the 2022-23 season. Northern will face Carl Albert State and No. 4 Central Oklahoma from Edmond at 4 and 6 p.m. on Friday.

#17 NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES
  • The No. 17 Wolves open the 2022-23 campaign after being picked third in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll
  • Northern went 10-3 overall a season ago and 6-3 in the Northern Sun with three Wolves (Cole Huss, Treyton Cacek, Wyatt Turnquist) qualifying for the NCAA Championships
  • Cole Huss was picked as the team's wrestler to watch following is All-American and fourth place finish at 197 pounds; he went 15-5 in 2021-22
  • In addition, the national qualifying trio earned preseason national rankings of No. 3 (Huss), No. 6 (Cacek), and No. 11 (Turnquist)
  • Rocky Burkett is in his eighth season at the helm of the Wolves
 
CARL ALBERT STATE STORYLINES
  • The Vikings went 3-3 a season ago
  • Carl Albert opened the season with a 22-21 victory over the University of the Ozarks, notching one major decision, two decisions, and two victories by fall
  • The Vikings have 31 student-athletes on their 2022-23 roster with 16 returners from 2021-22
  • CASC is led by head coach Jake Lords in his second season at the helm

  • The Bronchos are coming off a 13-0 season, Super Region IV Championship, and NCAA Runner-up finish in 2021-22
  • UCO returns seven from last season including National Champion Dalton Abney and All-Americans Brik Filippo, Alex Kauffman, and Shawn Streck
  • The Bronchos open the season at No. 4 in the NWCA rankings with ? wrestling individually ranked  including No. 11 Nate Keim (141), No. 3 Fillippo (149), No. 10 Gabe Johnson (157), No. 5 Kauffman (184), No. 1 Abney (197), and No. 3 Streck (285)
  • Central Oklahoma is led by head coach Todd Steidley in his seventh season at the helm
