Burnsville, Minn. – Following a successful 9-5-5 (7-3-5 NSIC) 2022 campaign and fresh off their second consecutive NSIC Tournament appearance, the Northern State women's soccer team was rewarded with their most all-conference performers in program history. Northern had a total of five players make the first and second teams with
Hannah Smith and
Lilja Davidsdottir earning All-NSIC First Team and
Megan Fastenau,
Alexus Townsend, and
Mia Zagorski earning All-NSIC Second Team. The postseason soccer teams were highlighted with Smith earning NSIC Freshman of the Year honors.
After having her first two seasons at Northern State cut short due to her 2020 season being canceled and receiving a medical redshirt in 2021, Smith made the most of her redshirt-freshman season and was rewarded with NSIC Freshman of the Year and All-NSIC First Team honors. She tallied eight goals and an assist for a total of 17 points, leading the team in both goals and points. With all 17 points occurring in conference play, Smith tied for second in the league in goals, tied for third in game-winning goals, and was tied for fourth in points. Her lone penalty kick attempt of the season resulted in the game-winning goal against MSU Moorhead in the regular season finale, clinching the Wolves second consecutive NSIC Tournament bid. Smith recorded one multi-goal game this season with a two goal performance in a 4-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.
Davidsdottir spearheaded the Northern State defense and was named an All-NSIC First Team defender for the second time in her career (2021 All-NSIC First Team). She helped the team secure nine shutout wins and 11 total shutouts. The Wolves 11 shutouts tied for 13
th most nationally and tied for 26
th with 0.579 shutouts per game. The NSU defense allowed two or more goals only three times all season and their goals-against average of 0.632 ranked 34
th nationally. Davidsdottir earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Week on October 31 following a 3-0 win over MSU Moorhead.
Fastenau was named to the All-NSIC Second Team for the second time in her career (2021 All-NSIC Second Team). She tallied four goals and a team-high four assists for a total of 12 points this season. In conference play she tied for sixth in the league with four assists and was tied for 18
th with ten points. Fastenau scored one game-winning goal this season against Black Hills State and assisted on the game-winning goal twice.
Townsend earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career as she was named All-NSIC Second Team. She ranked in the top-50 nationally in three individual categories throughout the season, ranking 18
th with a 0.870 save percentage, 23
rd with eight shutouts, and was 42
nd with a goals-against average of 0.687. In single season program history, she sits third and fifth all-time in shutouts and goals-against average. In a home match against St. Cloud State, she recorded 13 saves, tying for fourth most all-time in NSU single game history. Townsend earned NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week honors twice this season on August 29 and September 26.
Zagorski's breakout junior season ended with her being named All-NSIC Second Team for the first time in her career. She tallied four goals and three assists for a total of 11 points this season. All four of her goals this season were game-winners which ranked 32
nd nationally. In conference matches she tied for third with three game-winners and tied for 12
th with three assists.
